Agnus Castus Side Effects

Agnus castus is common used native to Mediterranean Europe and Central Asia. And Agnus castus is used as a natural herbal treatment for female problems by raising the progesterone hormone and for male by lowering the testosterone levels. Even though as a natural herbal treatment, there are some agnus castus side effects. But agnus castus side effects affect the individual in different ways.

The common Agnus Castus side effects include :
• Nausea
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Dry mouth
• Acne
• Insomnia
For women, agnus castus side effects affect on hormonal medications. Such as, medication for estrogen replacement and birth control pills. Agnus castus has been used to enhance breast milk supply, but it actually reduces prolactin. Prolactin is the breastfeeding hormone needed for milk production. It may be excreted in breastmilk. And it could have for babies who drink the affected milk.

Agnus castus also cause menstrual disorder and other hormonal problems. It is due to relative progesterone deficiency. This includes pre-menstrual syndrome, an ovulatory cycle, polymenorrhea, secondary amenorrhoea, infertility and hyperprolactinemia.


And for men, Agnus castus side effects affect on the sex hormones that cause reduce sexual desire. For long term, agnus castus can cause temporary or permanent infertility. It because the agnus castus prevents sperm production.

As with any herb, one of Agnus castus side effects is an allergic reaction. The sign include an itching, hives, or trouble breathing, throat or mouth swelling. For some serious allergic reaction, should take a medical attention.

Agnus castus is exceptionally safe. Agnus castus side effects are rare. Minor gastrointestinal upset and a mild skin rash with itching have been reported in less than 2% of the women monitored while taking Agnus Castus. It’s not recommended to take vitex agnus castus during pregnancy.
